Growing 5 acres of blackberries for 10+ years at The Owasso Tree and Berry Farm has been a challenging and learning experience.
We have experimented with many old as well as new varieties and different methods of growing the berries.

We currently have 3 varieties of blackberries:
Kiowa & Chicksaw - produce largest berries
Quachita - thornless variety
| |
All of our berries are mulched for weed control, cane management, and moisture and temperature control.
Kiowa, the largest variety is on a wire trellis to keep canes and fruit up off the ground and for maintenance.

Our fields are mowed weekly and canes are pruned into a hedge row detering snakes, ticks and chiggers.
| |
Our season for picking starts approximately June 1st and runs for 4-6 weeks - weather permitting.
We furnish pails for picking and juice absorbent fiber cartons for transporting. We recommend a glove for your non-picking hand (
For left hand if you are right handed.) For parting and moving canes.

Blackberries are a perishable fruit so we only pick in the morning when most days, it is some what cooler.
Berries need to be refrigerated as soon as possible after picking and generally will last 3-5 days in the refrigerator.

Blackberries are a very nutritional fruit with a 1 cup serving (140gm) providing 50% of Vitamin C, 10% of Folate and 22% Fiber of your daily
requirements. Blackberries are also a good source for Potassium, Calcium and Iron. In addition the compound Ellagic Acid identified as an anticarcinogen is found in blackberries.

Fresh blackberries are great for cobblers, jams, jellies, ice cream and cereal toppings. They also freeze very well for later use. We have recipe sheets available.

The only place you can find vine ripened blackberries is a local grown produce stand or a you-pick farm. Blackberries do not ripen once they are picked and once ripe are too perishable to ship. If you have
not eaten a vine ripened blackberry you have not lived!!!
